ENERGY ISLAND LTD.
Dominic Michaelis - Founder/Director

After graduating in architecture from Cambridge, and obtaining an MSc in structural engineering from Cornell, Dominic begun his career with Arup Associates and Piano Rogers. He then went on to set up his own practice to which he linked a consultancy, Solar Energy Developments, designing a number of built solar projects including:

Individual solar houses across the UK and Europe, passive and active solar heating for low cost apartment blocks in Pisa and Siena for IACP, an evaporative cooled house in Marrakech and 5 health centres in Mali, built of pisé walls, a Polytechnic in Barbados, where inclined hollow roofs are used to create natural air conditioning, and a solar factory office building in Stockport (UK) that won an RIBA award.
He also worked with Noor-Web, Morocco, to established a network of village photovoltaic battery recharging centres for the agricultural communities not served by the grid.

Dominic patented an all-flexible wave energy converter developed with Peter Rice of Arup (see Wikipedia). A sea-going prototype proved the viability of the system. This marine energy work brought him in contact with the International OTEC Association, which published his article on Energy Island in their summer newsletter 2002, their penultimate publication before the association ceased its activities.

Alex Michaelis – Managing Director

Educated at Westminster School, The Architecture Association and Oxford Brookes University, Alex set up his own practice in 1991 having worked for John Miller and Partners, Julyan Wickham & Associates as well as Dominic his father, who then ran a company in the UK called Solar Energy Developments.

In 1994 he teamed up with Tim Boyd to create Michaelis Boyd Associates (MBA). After promoting environmental design and renewable energy, it was only having tested many systems in his own house that MBA has been allowed to integrate these systems in many of the projects they now do, including the house of David Cameron MP.

The practice now specialises in sustainable design and works in hospitality (hotels and restaurants), office, housing developments and private houses including the eco-hotel, Sawston Hall. Private eco-homes include Berezavoir as well as ones on Oxford Gardens, Chepstow Road and Kingsbridge Road.
